IPTV setup on a Fire TV Stick

Fire TV does not carry IPTV players in its own store, so the app is installed manually. It is eight minutes and six steps, and we stay on WhatsApp while you do it.

01 — The steps

How do I set up IPTV on a Fire TV Stick?

Install the free Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore, allow it to install other apps in your Fire TV settings, then use it to download the player we send you. Sign in with your login details and the channel list loads. The whole thing takes about eight minutes.

  1. Message us for your details

Send us a WhatsApp message saying you are on Fire TV. We reply with the download code for Downloader, the player app name, and your username and password. You need these before you start, so get them first.

  2. Install Downloader from the Amazon Appstore

From the Fire TV home screen, go to the search icon and type Downloader. It is free, made by AFTVnews, and has an orange icon. Install it, but do not open it yet.

Home → Search (magnifier) → "Downloader" → Get / Download
  3. Turn on Developer Options

On newer Fire TV software this menu is hidden until you unlock it. Open Settings, go to My Fire TV, then About, highlight your device name and press the select button seven times. A message says you are now a developer. If you already see Developer Options in My Fire TV, skip this step.

Settings → My Fire TV → About → [device name] × 7 presses
  4. Allow Downloader to install apps

Go back to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options, then Install Unknown Apps. Find Downloader in the list and switch it on. On older Fire TV software there is a single switch called Apps from Unknown Sources instead — turn that on.

Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps → Downloader → ON
  5. Download the player app

Open Downloader. In the URL box type the download code we sent you, then press Go. When it finishes downloading, choose Install, then Done. Choose Delete when it offers, to free space on the stick.

  6. Sign in and test it

Open the player from your apps. Enter your username and password exactly as we sent them — they are case sensitive. Give the channel list and guide two minutes to fill, then open a few channels you actually watch while we are still on the chat.

02 — The step people get stuck on

Where is Developer Options on my Fire TV?

It depends on how old your Fire TV software is. On older versions it sits in the menu already. On newer versions Amazon hid it, and you unlock it by pressing the select button seven times on your device name under About. This is the step most people stall on.

Finding the setting on each Fire TV version
What you see in SettingsWhat to do Setting name
My Fire TV → Developer Options is there Go straight in Install Unknown Apps, or Apps from Unknown Sources
My Fire TV → no Developer Options About → highlight device name → press select 7 times Developer Options then appears in My Fire TV
Settings → Device instead of My Fire TV Older software — Developer Options sits under Device Apps from Unknown Sources (single switch)

Turn the Install Unknown Apps switch back off once the player is installed. It is not needed after that, and leaving it on lets anything else install without asking you.

03 — Models

Which Fire TV models handle IPTV best?

Every Fire TV model works, and the setup is identical on all of them. The 4K Max and the Cube hold a picture best in the evening because of better wifi and, on the Cube, a proper ethernet port. The Lite works fine but tops out at 1080p.

Fire TV models and IPTV playback
ModelMax picture Wired ethernetWorth knowing
Fire TV Stick Lite1080pAdapter onlyCheapest, fine for HD, no 4K
Fire TV Stick1080pAdapter onlyAdds TV volume and power buttons
Fire TV Stick 4K4KAdapter onlyThe usual choice for a 4K TV
Fire TV Stick 4K Max4KAdapter onlyFaster wifi, noticeably steadier at peak times
Fire TV Cube4KBuilt inEthernet port on the unit, the most reliable option

A ten euro ethernet adapter fixes more evening freezing on an Irish connection than upgrading the stick does. If your router is in the hall and the TV is in the sitting room, the cable is the better spend.

04 — If it goes wrong

Fire TV problems and how to fix them

Almost every Fire TV problem is one of five things: the unknown apps switch is off, the download code was mistyped, the stick has run out of storage, the app is running out of memory, or the wifi band is wrong. Work down the table in order.

05 — Questions

Fire TV questions people ask

The five answers below cover what comes up around Fire TV specifically: whether sideloading is safe, whether a computer is needed, what happens after a Fire TV update, using the same stick on a second TV, and whether the remote works with the player.

Is installing an app this way safe?

Downloader is a normal free app from the Amazon Appstore and the unknown apps switch is a standard Fire TV setting. Turn the switch back off once you are done and the stick is exactly as it was.

Do I need a computer or a USB stick?

No. Everything happens on the Fire TV itself using the remote. There is nothing to plug in and nothing to download on a laptop first.

Will a Fire TV update remove the player?

Updates leave installed apps alone. Occasionally an update resets the unknown apps switch, which only matters if you are installing something new — the player already on there keeps working.

Can I move the stick to another TV?

Yes. Unplug it and plug it into any other TV with an HDMI port. Everything stays installed and signed in — it only needs the new wifi details if the network is different.

Does the Fire TV remote work in the player?

Yes, the directional pad and select button navigate the channel list normally. Voice search on the remote controls Fire TV itself rather than the player, so search inside the app using the on-screen keyboard.
